No one likes being uncomfortable—it’s human nature to seek relief from pain and discomfort. This thought lingered in my mind as I stood at the base of another challenging trail in Uttarakhand, my backpack heavy with supplies and my heart pounding with a mix of excitement and dread. As a newbie trekker with three treks under my belt, I knew the mountains could be unpredictable and demanding.
My first trek to Deoriatal Chandrashila (DC) was a real eye-opener. The 13km night ascent was tough, especially without enough sleep. Each step felt like a battle, but the breathtaking view at the summit made it all worthwhile. During this trek, I had many reflections. I learned that pushing through discomfort often leads to the most profound rewards and that we’re capable of more than we realize.
Dayara Bugyal seemed like a walk in the park at first, with its gentle slopes and lush meadows. However, summit day hit me with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Unprepared, I struggled with the altitude. This trek showed me how strong I really am, even when faced with unexpected challenges. It reminded me that determination can push us forward, even when we don’t feel our best.
Then came Brahmatal, with its steep ascents. This was my most daunting trek yet, especially since I had just recovered from back-to-back illnesses—COVID, influenza, and another viral infection. Despite feeling weak, I decided to test my limits. This trek turned out to be the most fun I’ve had, making me realize how committed I am to climbing mountains. It taught me the value of perseverance and pushing through tough times.
Looking back on these treks, I see how the struggle and effort made the achievements meaningful. Each step taken in discomfort made me a stronger, more resilient person. Every trek had its own challenges, teaching me about perseverance and resilience.
So, the next time you face a challenge, remember that discomfort is part of growth. Embrace it, push through, and keep your eyes on the goal. You never know what you might achieve if you just keep moving forward. Through these treks, I came out stronger, wiser, and more hooked on the mountains than ever before.
