2019 was quite eventful. Yet when I try to remember my most happy memories, our(me and le Husband) 5 week unplanned trip to Vietnam is the first thing that comes to my mind. We have never gone on long trips for more than a week, so 5 weeks was quite a stretch and we were both apprehensive and excited about it. It turned out to be a magical experience filled with memories for a lifetime. And now with travel out of the picture for the foreseeable future, this was most definitely one the best decision we ever made.
If you had asked me to pen down one memorable experience of every month in 2019, I don’t think I would be able to do that without looking at calendars, photos, mails etc. and yet I remember pretty much each and every day of our Vietnam adventure. That’s shocking and frankly a little sad. As the rising sun rays fell on my journal, a tiny-winy crab fearlessly crawling towards me brought me back to reality. I took a deep breath soaking in the amazing beach view for one last time as we wind-up our amazing adventure. I pledged to never take life for granted and let days slip by in a blur.
Being a freelancer, I could easily work from any part of the world. All I needed was a good internet and phone connection. “That’s it, 2020 is my year of travel”, I said brimming with happiness. And then COVID happened :(. I love to travel but I don’t want to risk my life for it. And since, I don’t own a vehicle or know driving – road trips are out of the picture. This really sucks.
After small episodes of self-pity and whining, I decided to confront the challenge without getting emotional. And Boom!! I came up with my travel hack. Are you ready for it??
Watching good travel documentaries and cooking delectable local cuisines. It might come across as a no-brainer or really silly but to me it’s the next best thing to travel given the current constraints.
According to a 2010 psychological study published in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life, just planning or anticipating your trip can make you happier than actually taking it. Travelling to a new place fills you with new vivid life experiences that teleports you out of your everyday routine.
Think about it, when you travel to a new city – you learn about the culture, history, people by visiting the top attractions, understanding the story behind it, eating local food, interacting with people, etc. It’s these stories, the immersive and sensory experiences that create timeless memories and sticks. All of us long for something deeper. Something that reminds you of what it feels to be human. Storytelling is the tool that connects the dots.
So, now that you are intrigued, these are my top picks –
Street Food Asia (Netflix) – I can’t praise this enough. It’s a celebration of different street food dishes and traditions around Asia and a loving tribute to the exceptional street food chefs. The highlight of the show is the focus on the challenges and hardships they have endured, the devotion to their craft, hard work, persistence, and the zest to keep their traditions alive. I have a newfound respect for these superheroes. If you have time to watch just one show – pick this. Thank me later.
I’m currently watching Restaurants on the edge – this is a series on a team of experts helping restaurants across the globe with the most amazing views to revamp their business. It’s a culinary and destination virtual voyage.
Some of my other recommendations are – The calling, I can you can (Mount Everest Trek with Miland Soman), Mini Me (Travel adventures of Mini Mathur with her 8-year-old daughter). If movies are more of your style then Karwaan, Be Wild, Into the wild would certainly be your friend.
Oh and for the cooking part, most of these places had non-vegetarian delicacies and the magical local ingredients were not available online. So I restored to trying new dishes and it was fun and quite an experience (minus the kitchen mess and the piles of dirty dishes).
I hope this becomes your gateway to the unknown and brings a bit of the wanderlust to your doorsteps. Remember, We’re all in this together!

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100 sure. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Appreciate it|
