One friend needed a long time to feel reassured about a relationship, someone else talked through work until they ran out of breath, and another just needed a place to unload their frustration.

She sat through all of it, absorbing the tone of their voices, the long pauses, and the heavy sighs. Her body carried those conversations long after they ended. Halfway through scrubbing a pan, something caught her attention. In all those heavy conversations, nobody had actually asked how she was doing. The thought felt neutral, almost plain — like noticing a door in a hallway she had walked past every day without ever really seeing it.

She finished the dishes and sat down at the kitchen table. The room was quiet in that late-evening way, where the day had ended but hadn’t quite let go. She tried to remember the last time someone had asked her a question out of genuine curiosity, not just habit. Nothing came to mind.

It wasn’t that the people around her were unkind. They loved her, but they trusted her because she was good at hearing what hadn’t been said. Since childhood, she learned to read the room, smooth things over before anyone could trip and that became her whole identity. People saw it as generosity, but she mistook it for belonging.

Sitting there, she could feel how automatic it had become. Managing everyone’s emotional state was a reflex now. She anticipated the bad weather, handled the problems, and gave away her energy without thinking about the cost. But only tonight did it occur to her that there might actually be a limit to what she could give. She tried to think of a simple sentence about her own day, or her own feelings, but the words felt clumsy and thin. It was like trying to speak a language she had never learned. The realization brought heavy recognition, not sadness.

She had lost track of herself – a byproduct of forgetting she existed outside of helping people.

There was no grand decision that followed, just a subtle shift. Tomorrow will look exactly the same as today. Perhaps next time someone feels uncomfortable, she can let them sit with it.
She might just check her own battery before offering to carry their weight.

She was at the sink after dinner, rinsing plates on autopilot, when her mind drifted through the week’s conversations.
